The Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA), last Wednesday secured the conviction of a former employee of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, for the offences of Larceny as a Servant and Money Laundering.
Ms. Alvira Campbell, 35, pleaded guilty to the charges in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court, following her arrest and charge on January 13, 2022. The arrest followed an investigation by MOCA Agents who were alerted by the MLSS, following a 2018 audit which uncovered a number of irregularities within the Public Assistance Department, responsible for reviewing applications and disbursing aid under the Rehabilitation Program.
MOCA's investigation revealed that between January 2014 and November 2017, Ms. Campbell exploited her position to illegally obtain a total of $807,500 Jamaican dollars. These funds were used to cover tuition fees for herself at the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean and for her son at the Mico Foundation.
Ms. Campbell was arrested on January 13, 2022, and a search of her residence led to the seizure of several items. Subsequently, she was interviewed by MOCA officers and later charged with Larceny as a Servant and Money Laundering.
According to Major Basil Jarrett, Director of Communications of MOCA, "This conviction underscores the serious consequences of corrupt activities and the diligent efforts of law enforcement agencies to uphold justice".
Sentencing is to take place on July 31, 2024.
