Detective Constable Oniel Barrett of the Major Investigation Division was offered bail in the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars ($150,000.00) with sureties when he appeared in the St. Catherine Parish Court on October 9, 2018.
Barrett was arrested and charged by detectives from MOCA on Monday October 9, 2018 for breaching the Corruption Prevention Act and Attempting to Pervert the Course of Justice. Reports are that in November 2016, while investigating a murder case he got information that a member of the community witnessed the murder and would give evidence in exchange for Thirty Thousand Dollars ($30,000.00). It is alleged that the constable contacted a member of the deceased’s family and solicited the money.
Subsequently, a report was made to MOCA by the family member and an investigation conducted. The file was prepared and submitted to the Director of Public Prosecution who directed that Detective Constable Barrett be charged. He will return to court on Friday October 19, 2018.
