On Monday January 6, 2020 Detective Constable Oneil Barrett of the Major Investigation Division (MID) was found guilty for Attempt to Pervert the Course of Justice, when he appeared before the St. Catherine Parish Court.
Facts are that, on November 15, 2016 Detective Constable Oneil Barrett commenced an investigation into a case of murder which occurred in Linstead, St. Catherine. During the investigation Barrett received information that there was a potential witness to the murder. Consequently, Barrett informed the accused sister of this development and corruptly solicited Thirty Thousand Dollars ($30,000.00) which he purported was to be handed over to the witness in exchange for a statement in favour of her brother.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) and a file prepared and submitted the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for a ruling. Based on the recommendation from DPP, Barrett was arrested and charged for Attempt to Pervert the Course of Justice. He was subsequently placed before the St. Catherine Parish Court, where the matter was tried and the accused found guilty.
